Wilsonville Rotary Club awards scholarships

The Rotary Club of Wilsonville announced it has awarded three college scholarships to 2014 Wilsonville High School graduates through its nonprofit Wilsonville Rotary Foundation.

The three $2,500 scholarships were funded with proceeds from Rotary’s Heart of Gold Celebration and First Citizen Awards Banquet, held March 15. The scholarships may be used at any accredited college or university of the recipient’s choice. The awards were based on academic achievement, community involvement and need, in addition to other qualifications specific to each award.

The three scholarship winners are: Kierra Rowan, John Wysock Memorial Scholarship; Jessica Small, Ralph Fronville Memorial Scholarship; Mary Roberts, Wilsonville Rotary Foundation Scholarship.

“These are outstanding graduates and truly deserving,” said outgoing club foundation Chairman Jake McMichael. “It is an honor to be able to help support their college dreams, and it is only possible because of the hard work of Rotarians and the generous support of Wilsonville residents and businesses through our annual Heart of Gold Celebration.”

All three recipients earned a GPA higher than 4.0 by taking Advanced Placement courses and participated in a variety of activities and community service projects.

The John Wysock Memorial Scholarship is named for former Wilsonville Rotary President John Wysock and is awarded based on community service. Rowan served as Associated Student Body president at WHS during her senior year and has volunteered in many capacities in the community, including with the Wilsonville Food Bank and as a volunteer tutor. She was a member of National Honor Society and plans to attend the University of Oregon.

The Ralph Fronville Memorial Scholarship is named for a former Wilsonville Rotarian and is given to a student interested in international studies. Small served on the Student Council at Wilsonville High School and helped expand the WHS canned food drive into a community drive involving all local schools. She was also a member of National Honor Society and plans to attend Brigham Young University to study nursing.

The Wilsonville Rotary Foundation Scholarship is awarded based on merit and need. This year’s recipient, Mary Roberts, volunteered with the G3 project at Grace Chapel, as an Outdoor School counselor, with the Kiwanis Kids Fun Run and on several cleanup projects. She will attend Montana State University, where she will study engineering.

The Wilsonville Rotary Club meets every Thursday at noon at Al Kader Shrine Center in Wilsonville, and visitors are welcome. For more information, visit wilsonvillerotary.com, or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
