Golf teams jump out to strong starts


The WL girls win their first league tourneys and the boys take second

Sarah Archuleta was the medalist at Stone Creek Monday, firing a 69 to help lead the Lions to a team victory.West Linn's golf teams are each off to strong starts after a pair of league tournaments. The West Linn boys have finished second behind Lake Oswego in each event to start the season, giving the Lions the early leg up to qualify for state.

Monday, West Linn shot a season-low total of 314 at Oswego Lake Country Club. The Lions have been remarkably even and consistent early in the year. CJ Sitton and Ryan Kelley have fired 79s in each of their first two tournaments.

At Oswego Lake, Hayden Coppedge was the low man for the Lions with a 76.

Brett Bushnell fired an even 80, while Soren Carr continues his strong start to the season, shooting an 81.

West Linn's total was enough to fend off a strong showing from Lakeridge in third with a 323.

Lake Oswego remains difficult to catch as its top four golfers all fired scores of 75 or better on the team's home course.

The boys will play at Willamette Valley Country Club next week.

For the girls, West Linn is cruising in the early going. West Linn had a terrific round at Stone Creek Monday, coming in with a team score of 305.

Sarah Archuleta led the way with one of the better rounds of her high school career, shooting a 69, including a 33 on the back-nine.

Amanda Elich was next with a 77 and Kristin Elich fired a 79.

Chloe Barnes shot a round of 80 and Katie Fillion was close behind with an 81 as the entire team figured among the top scores individually at the tournament.

The West Linn girls will play at Arrowhead next week.
