Strong schools make strong communities

Consider supporting the West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation

Have you ever asked or been asked “Why should someone who does not have children in our public schools care about fundraising efforts on behalf of our schools?”

Schools are focused on children and their families. However, they are also a reflection of their surrounding communities.

Studies show strong communities and strong schools go hand in hand. The benefits of a strong school system include maintaining and increasing property values, providing a qualified workforce, lowering crime rates, creating a strong sense of community, supporting more stable families and enhancing public services with less demand for social programs. These are benefits to all members of our communities, not just those with school-aged children.

The communities of West Linn and Wilsonville are known for having a strong school district and strong communities. These past years of economic decline have resulted in a time of change for our schools and communities. The adequate state funding for schools that was present when you and I were young is no longer available. As funding remains relatively flat and operating costs and the rate of inflation increase, the needs of students are also compounding.

It is the job of school leaders to continue to maintain our strong tradition of excellence while operating under these complex changes and challenges. Our school leaders have done an excellent job in this regard. Our school leaders have made changes in how our schools operate today. They’ve looked critically at our budget, increased our efficiencies, reduced staff, restructured staff members’ workload and made significant cost savings. The West Linn-Wilsonville School District is a smarter, albeit leaner, school district than in the past.

The West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation is an organization helping alleviate the burden of reduction in teaching positions. The foundation is a non-profit organization raising monies for the specific purpose of hiring new teachers in our district. The foundation’s efforts have a direct impact on our schools and classrooms.

I would like to encourage all members of our communities, to support the foundation as it embarks on its “COUNT me in” campaign this May. The goal is simple: raise dollars to fund additional teaching positions and help keep our schools the best in the state of Oregon.

Our schools and their success not only affect our young people, but all those living within our school boundaries. I encourage every reader to take a moment and give something to the foundation’s campaign. You can do so by visiting the Foundation’s website at wlwvfoundation.org or by sending money to West Linn-Wilsonville Education Foundation, 1980 Willamette Falls Drive No. 120-117, West Linn 97068.
