Robert L. Ruff, 90, was transported to OSHU Thursday afternoon and died later that evening

An elderly man died Thursday after a tree fell on an adult foster home near the 20000 block of Willamette Drive.

According to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, the man — 90-year-old Robert L. Ruff — was sitting on the porch of the home when the tree fell just after 5:15 p.m. Crews responded quickly and Ruff was still alive when he arrived at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital. In a press release Friday, the City of West Linn said that Ruff died later that evening.

"This was a tragic event and is a loss to the community," Citizen Engagement Coordinator Courtney Flynn said in the release. "Our thoughts are with Mr. Ruff's family and caregivers."

The City's press release added that there will be a "full and thorough investigation to ensure protocol and policies were followed."

TVF&R spokesperson Kim Haughn said that while there were thunderstorms in the area at the time, that was not what caused the tree to fall.

"It was an older tree that was not in good health, about 60 feet tall," Haughn said. "It was just age and the tree fell."
