Volunteer your time this summer

The library is offering a number of volunteering opportunities this summer, from stocking shelves to helping out at the summer reading table. Summer is always a fun and busy time at the West Linn Public Library.

Our summer reading program for kids, teens and adults kicks off in June and we will have many exciting programs.

Patrons come in to stock up on entertainment for long road trips, pick up a book on grilling, learn about new hobbies or simply to enjoy our air conditioning and a quiet place to relax with a good book and a nice view.

We are able to provide these great services largely because of our great volunteers and during the summer, we need extra help. Come join our awesome volunteer team!

For teens

We are looking for teens — entering eighth grade through twelfth grade in the fall — to help us run our summer reading table in the kids’ area downstairs.

Volunteers will sit at the table and sign patrons up using a laptop and our new Evanced registration system, answer any questions about Evanced accounts or reading tracking, and hand out prizes to our summer reading program finishers.

Having the chance to congratulate and give prizes to kids and other teens that have finished is a great experience.

If you interested in this volunteer opportunity, you can now sign up for two-hour shifts at the downstairs Youth Services desk. You can sign up for as many or as few shifts as you would like to volunteer during June, July and August.

No volunteer application or interview is required for this program.

This is a good way to fulfill volunteer credit for school requirements and it looks great on job resumes and college applications!

For adults

We are looking for adults to help us pull holds, shelve, work in the Friends of the Library book store and help with community outreach. These volunteer opportunities are typically two-hour shifts scheduled at a regular day and time each week. We provide shelving training (and candy!). We ask for a three-month minimum commitment for these tasks. We could also use some volunteers with fairly flexible schedules to fill in for regular volunteers on vacation. This is a great way to meet new people, learn about the library, and give back to the community.

To sign up visit the library’s website at westlinnlibrary.org, and click “Volunteer” in the “I want to” menu. You will find a detailed description of our volunteer program and a link to our online volunteer application. Once your application has been received, the volunteer coordinator will then contact you for an interview.

The whole library staff looks forward to working with you!
