Bring on this year's holiday cheer

Festival events set in West Linn, Lake Oswego


Brace yourselves. The whirlwind of the holiday season is about to start blowing. Soon everyone’s calendars will start filling with holiday parties, family gatherings, gift shopping and special events. It is easy to let some of the fun city events slip by unnoticed in the upcoming hectic weeks without careful planning.

So break out your calendars, here is a rundown of holiday events in West Linn and Lake Oswego.

Dec. 6

12th annual Community Tree Lighting — Friday, Dec. 6, 6 p.m. at West Linn City Hall and Cascade Summit Town Square. Little ones can warm up inside city hall with cookie decorating and a movie. Don’t miss the treats, in-store specials and offerings of the businesses of Cascade Summit Town Square. Donations of nonperishable food and new unwrapped toys will be accepted on behalf of the West Linn Food Pantry to benefit local families. Holiday market and mistletoe merriment — Dec. 6, 5 to 8:30 p.m. and Dec. 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way. Enjoy the old-fashioned charm of the holidays as you shop for exceptional treasures. Warm up with a festive Friday evening happy hour and enjoy family activities on Saturday that include train rides and a visit with Santa. Merry holiday additions have been added to this annual event, which is co-presented by the city of Lake Oswego and Lake Oswego Mothers Club.

Dec. 7

Lakewood Theatre Company’s “The Peppermint Bear Show ‘Seasoned Greetings’” — Dec. 7, 14 and 21, Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St. “The Peppermint Bear Show ‘Seasoned Greetings’” takes place at the North Pole as the elves are preparing for the holidays. Opens Dec. 7 and continues Dec. 14 and 21 with 9 and 11 a.m. shows. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children. Dec. 11

Holiday open house, Lake Oswego Public Library — Dec. 11, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., 706 Fourth St. Featuring live entertainment and holiday refreshments, the Lake Oswego Public Library’s annual event will offer something for everyone. At 1 p.m., Three Pound Note, a duo of ex-pats from England, will perform traditional English folk music, including a special program of winter songs. At 3 p.m., Talia Dugan on clarinet and her mother, Renee Dugan, on keyboard, will perform assorted holiday music, both instrumental and vocal. Dugan is a sophomore at Lake Oswego High School and is principal clarinetist of the LOHS wind ensemble and a member of the LOHS pit orchestra.

Dec. 13

Lakewood Theatre Company’s “White Christmas” — Dec. 13-29, Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St. Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” runs Dec. 13 through Dec. 29, with performances at 7:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. matinees on Dec. 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29. No performances planned for Dec. 16, 23, 24 and 25. Tickets range in price from $20 for those 25 and young; $34 for seniors and $36 for adults. Dec. 14

2013 West Linn Annual Holiday Parade — Saturday, Dec. 14, 10 a.m. on Willamette Falls Drive in West Linn. This year’s theme is “It’s a Wonderful Life West Linn — 100 Years.” The parade begins at 10 a.m. and day of parade registration and check-in starts at 9 a.m. Pre-registration preferred. Join Santa after parade at Willamette Fire Station. There will be hot cocoa, cider and cookies. Bring a new unwrapped toy for local children in need and visit local merchants in historic Willamette Area. This year once again prior to the Holiday Parade will be the Ugly Holiday Sweater Dash. Ugly Holiday Sweater Dash — Saturday, Dec. 14, 9 a.m. to noon at Willamette Falls Drive in West Linn. The 5K fun run starts at 9 a.m. and fee includes race number, breakfast and commemorative mug to use throughout your holiday season. The run raises funds and food donations for the West Linn Food Pantry. Cost is $25 per adult, plus two cans of food for the West Linn Food Pantry Food Drive. Kids 12 years and younger are $20, plus can of food. The 1-mile dash starts at 9:30 a.m. Fee Includes race number, great course, breakfast, commemorative mug to use throughout your holiday season and to raise funds and food donations for the West Linn Food Pantry. Cost is $15 per person, plus two cans of food and kids 12 and younger are $10, plus one can of food. There is also a special family rate of $40 for two adults and two children plus six cans of food. Christmas Ship Parade — Dec. 14, 6 p.m., Foothills Park.

2013 marks the 59th year of the magical Christmas Ship Parade. Enjoy a parade of up to 60 brightly colored boats decorated for the holiday season. The boats depart from River Place Marina and continue as far as George Rogers Park, arriving between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit christmasships.org.

Dec. 15

Have brunch with Santa — Sunday, Dec. 15, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Oregon Golf Club, 25700 SW Pete’s Mountain Road, West Linn. This family event is filled with many kids’ keepsake crafts, a silent auction, music, peppermint milkshakes, continental breakfast, photos with Santa and more. Crafts are primarily targeted at ages 3 to 8. Prepay in advance for $10 (children 2 and younger are free). Payments can be made on MOMS Club of West Linn website at momsclubofwestlinn.org. Cost is $12 at the door. (Credit cards accepted at door with additional service fee). Proceeds benefit Clackamas Women’s Services, the only shelter in Clackamas County for women and children escaping family violence.
