Attend Soul-Filled Christmas Concert at The UNITY Center

Be prepared to clap your hands, stomp your feet and shout out loud at the third annual Soul-Filled Christmas Concert Dec. 8 at The UNITY Center in West Linn.

Previous years’ concerts have sold out, so there will be two shows at 4 and 6:30 p.m. this year.

Directed by Portland soul and blues artist LaRhonda Steele, the concert will include performances by Grammy Award winner Janice Scroggins, the 40-member strong Portland Interfaith Gospel Choir and the vocals of MaryEtta Callier-Wells, Arietta Ward, Ron Shoals and Steele in a gospel ensemble called “The Group.”

There will also be performances by blues musician “The Boogie Cat” Norman Sylvester, the voices of Lauren and Sarah Steele, Renato Caranto on sax, Richard Lawrence on drums and Carl Falls on bass.

Enter Stafford Hamlet Trails T-shirt design contest

Local students are invited to create an original art logo for the Stafford Trails project.

Entries should include images, shapes and original design to graphically represent how trails connect people to the Stafford Hamlet. Entries can be submitted by any K-12 student. They must be original artwork with up to three colors in 8.5-by-11-inch format.

All entries will be reviewed by a panel of local artists and graphic design professionals for creativity, accurate representation of hamlet values and originality.

The first-place winner will receive a $100 gift card, and $50 gift cards will go to the second, third and fourth place winners.

Entries must be received by Dec. 7. They should be sent to 410 S. Bergis Road, Lake Oswego, OR 97034.

The top 10 entries will be voted on by hamlet residents at the Dec. 14 board elections meeting at Stafford Primary School.

Library closed for Thanksgiving

The West Linn Public Library is closed today (Thursday) and Friday for Thanksgiving and will reopen for normal business hours from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Attend happy hour with city councilor

Residents are invited to join West Linn City Councilor Thomas Frank at a no-host happy hour Dec. 10 at Lil’ Cooperstown from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Any questions, suggestions or ideas for West Linn are welcome for discussion.

Register for Sandelie Mud Run

Registration is now open for the 2014 Sandelie Mud Run on Sandelie Golf Course.

The event date is Jan. 11 and the race is limited to the first 250 entries.

There will be a 5K and a 10K event available, and a portion of all proceeds will benefit Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.

Maddax Woods holiday lights are on nightly

In its 10th year, Maddax Woods will be lit daily from 4 to 9 p.m. through Dec. 31. Come and enjoy a magical walk down a lighted accessible path through the woods and to the viewing platform on the Willamette River.

Volunteer at Maddax Woods

Maddax Woods needs help to fight back against English ivy and other non-native invasive plants. You can volunteer to help save the trees, native plants and animals in the nature parks. Every third Saturday of each month there are park restoration events. All individuals, families and groups are invited. Volunteers meet at 9 a.m. at the Maddax Woods parking area located at 5785 River St. in West Linn. The event hours are from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring sturdy shoes and gloves.

Volunteer group meets weekly at Mary S. Young State Park

Volunteers meet every Monday and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Mary S. Young State Park, 19900 Willamette Drive. Email or call John Linman or Dave Kruse about details or meet at the tool shed in the gravel parking lot. Bring your own work gloves. All necessary tools are provided.

Volunteer at the library

Many of the hundreds of items the West Linn Public Library checks in and shelves each day are handled by volunteers. The library is currently looking for people age 14 and older who can make a regular commitment to shelve library materials, keep shelves organized and participate in occasional special projects.

WLACC seeks volunteer bus driver

The West Linn Adult Community Center is looking for a volunteer bus driver with a current commerical driver’s license to drive its 18-passenger bus that takes members on daytime trips several times a month.

At times it involves just a few hours, while other trips last most of the day.

The community center has several drivers that it rotates through, and so it is not a significant time commitment.
