WL Lions set for wine raffle

The West Linn Lions Service Club has kicked off its 2013 scholarship drive for West Linn High School seniors graduating in June 2014.

This fifth annual wine raffle will raise more than $6,000 to add to the $46,000 in scholarships granted by the club over the last eight years.

The scholarships have been awarded to those intending to major in education, health care and technology, as well as students with special needs and those with outstanding community service backgrounds. Scholarships will be awarded at the West Linn High School Evening of Excellence in June.

The club will sell 700 raffle tickets ($10 per ticket or 11 tickets for $100) with 36 winners to be drawn at the Nov. 7 club meeting (contestants need not be present to win).

The first ticket drawn will receive wine valued at $275. The value for each winner then declines to $100 (donor suggested retail price) each for the later winners. The total retail value of the 24 cases donated is more than $5,400.

Ron Adams, West Linn Lions raffle chairman (503-636-8444), or any West Linn Lions Club member, can answer questions about the wines, ticket sales, scholarship selection and how winners will be contacted.

City wins budget award

The city of West Linn recently received the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.

The award reflects “the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.”

In order to receive the budget award, West Linn had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award. When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for its having achieved the award. This has been presented to the finance department.

For budgets including fiscal period 2012, more than 1,340 entities are expected to received the award.

The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit professional association serving more than 17,800 government finance professionals throughout North America.

The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

Volunteer at the library

Many of the hundreds of items the West Linn Public Library checks in and shelves each day are handled by volunteers. The library is currently looking for people age 14 and older who can make a regular commitment to shelve library materials, keep shelves organized and participate in occasional special projects.

For further information, call Shasta Barnes at the library at 503-656-7853, ext. 3020, or visit westlinnoregon.gov/library/volunteer-library.

WLACC seeks volunteer bus driver

The West Linn Adult Community Center is looking for a volunteer bus driver with a current commerical driver’s license to drive its 18-passenger bus that takes members on daytime trips several times a month.

At times it involves just a few hours, while other trips last most of the day.

The community center has several drivers that it rotates through, so it is not a significant time commitment.

Anyone interested in this volunteer position should contact the West Linn Adult Community Center at 503-557-4704.
