Take an audiobook on your summer road trip

Books on CD are available at the library

If you are taking a road trip with teens and adults in the same car this summer, get the kids to turn off their electronic devices and listen to these audiobooks together.

You’ll laugh out loud, you’ll weep and the stories will become part of your family lore.

These audiobooks are available on CD in the teen room at the West Linn Public Library or available to download as digital audiobooks on Library2Go.

“Son of the Mob” by Gordon Korman

Against the wishes of his father, 17-year-old Vince decides not to go into the family business — the Mafia — and then his life becomes really complicated when it turns out that his girlfriend is the daughter of the FBI agent investigating his father.

“Bucking the Sarge” by Christopher Paul Curtis

Fourteen-year-old Luther aspires to go to college and become a philosopher, all while operating shady businesses dealings for his mother (“The Sarge,”) including the Happy Neighbor Group home for men.

“Beauty Queens” by Libba Bray

Beauty pageant meets “Survivor” meets “Lord of the Flies” when a plane crash strands 13 teen beauty contestants on a mysterious island.

“Going Bovine” also by Libba Bray

Cameron Smith, a 16-year-old afflicted with both mad cow disease and a seriously bad attitude, sets off on a road trip with a death-obsessed video gaming dwarf and a lawn gnome.

“Norman Tuttle on the Last Frontier” by Tom Bodett

Adolescence is the Dork Ages for Norman Tuttle, who might be the klutziest kid in all of Alaska. (He falls off his father’s fishing boat in the middle of the icy ocean in the middle of the night.) Great family values see him through his unfortunate choices about girls, friends and teen life.

“Touching Spirit Bear” by Ben Mikaelsen

Cole has always been in trouble and has had so many “last chances” he figures he knows how to work the juvenile justice system. After a particularly violent assault he is banished to a remote Alaskan island, where an encounter with a huge Spirit Bear helps him take responsibility and find redemption.

“His Dark Materials” by Philip Pullman

Trilogy includes “The Golden Compass,” “The Subtle Knife” and “The Amber Spyglass.” An epic 40 hours on CD! Lyra is an orphan living in a parallel universe in which science, theology and magic intertwine in a fantasy adventure featuring armored polar bears, magical devices, witches and demons.

“Peace like a River” by Leif Enger

“We all hold history differently inside us,” says 12-year-old Reuben, whose brother, Davy, shot and killed two young men who were harassing the family. Reuben and family embark on a cross-country journey to find Davy in this novel filled with faith, miracles and family.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee

Harper Lee’s coming-of-age classic tells the story of 6-year-old Scout Finch, her older brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus, a small-town Alabama lawyer assigned to defend Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of rape. This is the quintessential audiobook for multigenerational listening and sharing.
