Annual West Linn Street Dance returns with music, juggling

by: TIDINGS FILE PHOTO: J. BRIAN MONIHAN - Last year's street dance in the historic Willamette area of West Linn brought a lot of family fun as community members joined together to dance. For about three hours on Saturday, the streets in the historic Willamette area will be filled not with cars, but with the tapping and sliding of dance shoes.

The sixth annual West Linn Street Dance begins at 5 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 13th Street and Willamette Falls Drive. Presented by the city’s parks and recreation department, the event features concerts by two featured artists, as well as food booths, kids activities and, of course, dancing.

The first musical performance will begin just as the event kicks off at 5 p.m. John English, also known as “The Voice,” will perform his tribute to Frank Sinatra set — an act that he showcases on a regular basis at the Portland International Airport and the Clarion Hotel.

English, according to Recreation Director Ken Warner, was featured in the first street dance back in 2008 and was invited to return as a special guest with the city celebrating its centennial this summer.

Following that, at about 6:30 p.m., children in attendance can try their hand at interactive juggling games with local juggler Scott “Mag” Hughes. Hughes will then perform his main act at 7:30 p.m.

The ceremonial opening of the dance is set for 7:50 p.m. as Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue presents the flag with its color guard.

The dancing begins in earnest at 8 p.m., when the Pressure Point Band takes the stage for a scheduled three-hour set. A variety band from Portland, Pressure Point claims to cover music from six decades, including just about everything but Dixieland, rap and heavy metal.

The vendors signed up to provide food and beverages for the street dance include Lil’ Cooperstown Grill & Bar, B.J. Willy’s Public House & Eatery, LaFiesta Mexican Kitchen and Shark Bait Hawaiian Shave Ice.

Face painting will also be available from UB Painted.
