Be a friend to the library

The group runs the Book Cellar, a used book store downstairs at the library, maintains a bookcase of high-quality sale books by the upstairs checkout counter and has the occasional mega-clearance book sale. They use the proceeds to support library programs, including the annual summer reading program for kids, teens and adults. (Any middle or high schooler attending a teen event at the library can tell you that the friends make these programs possible.)

The friends advocate for the library in the community; they recently testified before the city planning commission in support of the new library parking lot. When asked what else they do, Janet Dalgaard, longtime president of the West Linn Friends (and tireless volunteer) replied, “We do what the library needs us to do. We’re a nice group of people who share the common goal of wanting to help the library.”

And they’ve been doing it for a long time, somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 years. West Linn Public Library was located on the top floor of what is now the police station when the organization began. by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Good deals are easy to find at the used book store, located downstairs at the West Linn Public Library.

Since that time membership has grown to its current level of about 100 people.

The Friends of West Linn Library are always looking for more ways to help the library, and there are ways you can help.

The cost of membership is only $10 a year for an individual, or $15 for a family. Among the perks of membership — besides bragging rights — is having the first look at items before big sales.

The friends are seeking more volunteers to help operate the Book Cellar.

Their goal is to have enough volunteers that the Book Cellar can be open during all of the hours the library is open.

Currently, it is open Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday noon to 4 p.m. You can donate money directly to the Friends of West Linn Library by writing a check and mailing it to the library (West Linn Public Library, Attn. Friends, 1595 Burns St., West Linn, OR 97068.)

Or you can donate books and movies for the group to sell.

Hot new titles sell especially well, as do children’s books, interesting nonfiction and sci-fi. No moldy books or textbooks please. Donations can be brought to the upstairs checkout counter at the library. Tax receipts are available upon request.

The Friends of West Linn Library will be having one of its clearance sale bonanzas May 18 and 19 downstairs in the Teen Room at the library. Sale hours for Saturday, May 18, are noon to 5 p.m. Books will be half-price and the selection will be the best. Sale hours for Sunday, May 19, are noon to 4:30 p.m., and whatever books are left from Saturday will be $3 per bag.

Come and get some great stuff and support the Friends help the library.
