Kennedy High School graduate and Portland State commit Bishop Mitchell was among the many talented players to take part in the 2017 Les Schwab Bowl in Hillsboro on Saturday.
The annual football all-star game — which celebrated its 70th game on Saturday — attracts some of the most talented athletes from around the state, drawing mostly from 5A and 6A programs around the I-5 corridor in a contest between teams representing the north and south parts of the state.
As a member of the 2A Trojans, Mitchell was a rare small school athlete invited to the all-star game.
Although his team from the South won the contest 10-7, Mitchell mostly watched from the sideline and received just one carry in the game — a four-yard rush to open the South's first drive in the first quarter.
The South went on the shut out the North team for the first 46 minutes, 18 seconds of Saturday's contest and used that effort to fuel its 10-7 win in 100-degree temperatures at Hillsboro Stadium.
The South got the game's first score on a 17-yard Wyatt Smith-to-Harrison Steiger touchdown pass with 1:41 left in the first quarter, then tacked on a 28-yard Jerin Appling field goal with 4:37 to go in the third quarter to lead 10-0.
The North answered with its deepest drive of the game, threatening to score in the final three minutes, but quarterback Jason Dumont's throws to Malik Thirdgill and Kendrick Ervin both fell incomplete in the end zone.
After a South punt, the North came back for its lone score, a two-yard run by Jake McGreevey with 1:15 left in the contest.
Proceeds from the Les Schwab Tires Bowl benefit the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association general scholarship fund and all of Oregon's 5A and 6A schools. The OACA represents over 3,000 members/coaches involving all OSAA sanctioned sports.
East-West Shrine Game
The North Marion, Kennedy and St. Paul football teams will be represented in August at the annual East-West All-Star Shrine Football Game.
For the East team, North Marion senior Hunter Martin will suit up to represent the Huskies one last time.
Martin was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year in the Oregon West Conference as the quarterback for the Huskies last fall and went on to earn All-State recognition on the 4A Honorable Mention Team.
On the West team, Martin will be going up against a trio of players from St. Paul and Kennedy.
St. Paul's Jacob Forsyth will represent the Buckaroos after earning First Team All-Conference status on the defensive line, and later was named to the 2A All-State Second Team.
The Trojans will be represented by teammates Jeremy Kliewer and Brett Traeger.
Kliewer was a 2A First Team All-State selection on both the offensive line and the defensive line, while Traeger earned First Team recognition on the All-State team as a defensive back.
All four players will take part in the 65th Annual Shrine game in Baker City on Aug. 5.
Proceeds from the game will go toward the Shriners Hospitals for Children. For more information, go to www.eastwestshrinefootball.com.
