Cougars prepared to take the next step
Gervais boys soccer team's 2013 MVP Pieter Top transfers to Wilsonville
2014 GERVAIS BOYS SOCCER
Coach: Juan Flores
Last season: 5-4-5 (4-1-3 Special District 3), lost 6-0 to Riverdale in first round of 3A/2A/1A playoffs.
Key returners: Juan F. Navarette, Alex Isiordia, Gonzalo Zamora
Key Losses: Marcos Ramirez, Hector Flores, Jaime Morales, Pieter Top
Outlook: Last season was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Gervais boys soccer team. The Cougars were a relatively young squad, sporting just three seniors, but the team proved to be ready for the spotlight a year early.
Led by the dynamic scoring ability of forward Pieter Top, the Cougars jumped out to a 4-2-3 record midway through the season and were a threat to compete for the conference title before a late-season slump sent the team to a fifth-place finish in the Special District 3 Conference.
This years team will have to make do without Top, the Cougars leading scorer in 2013 with 27 goals, who transferred to Wilsonville High School over the summer.
In his place Gervais will lean heavily on returning all-conference players Juan F. Navarette, Alex Isiordia and Gonzalo Zamora.
Zamora gives the Cougars a solid option at forward to replace Top, while Navarette leads a defensive unit that held opponents scoreless in four games last season and limited teams to just one goal in four other contests.
Isiordia returns to Gervais after an impressive freshman season playing midfield in which he garnered Second Team honors in the conference.
Conference co-champions Blanchet Catholic and Western Mennonite return a number most of the players that led each team to unbeaten records in the SD3. But with all but three seniors scheduled to return to the Cougars this year, the Gervais boys soccer team is poised to build on its successful 2013 and challenge the conference elite this fall.
