Cross country: Brittany Horner named as new Husky coach

Coach: Brittany Horner

Last season: Men’s team placed 12th at 4A state championship.

Key athletes: Colin Barrow, Ulises Vargas, Klayton Pippert, Elbert Giron

Key losses: Christian Parr, Hannah Surcamp, Ben Hanberg, Grant Barrow

Outlook: The Huskies lost a pair of important names last spring, first when the team’s top runner Christian Parr graduated in May, and second when head coach Erin Holm stepped down. In his place, former assistant Brittany Horner is set to lead the North Marion runners this fall. The Huskies have a good framework to compete in league once again this season after placing second at the district meet last year.

If junior Colin Barrow picks up where he left off, with an eighth-place finish at districts, the Huskies will have a solid lead runner to replace Parr. Sophomore Ulises Vargas and seniors Klayton Pippert and Elbert Giron all give North Marion a core four runners to compete in their new conference.

The Oregon West won’t provide easy competition, but no doubt the Huskies will be glad to no longer compete against a La Salle team that finished with the five best runners in districts and won the 4A state championship
