Woodburn basketball camp returns after absence

The Woodburn boys basketball team finished its youth basketball camp Friday after inviting kids from third through eighth grade to come out and learn from the Bulldog basketball program’s players and coaches.

“It went pretty well,” Bulldogs varsity coach Enrique Sandoval said. “We had about 25 kids. We were hoping for a little bit more, but not bad considering we hadn’t had it in a couple years.”

The four-day camp opened with shooting drills on June 23 and progressed to basic skills like defense and rebounding in subsequent days. Sandoval took most of the coaching duties to open camp, but handed the reins over to his players at the junior varsity and varsity level, who came out as volunteer coaches for the week.

“They definitely saw how eager the kids were, and that made them eager in wanting to teach,” Sandoval said. “For the most part, they did a great job, I thought.”

Groups were divided by age, with kids from third, fourth and fifth grade playing together, while the more experienced athletes in sixth, seventh and eighth grade practiced advanced skills and concepts.

“We got them into stations and showed them what a correct defensive stance looked like with our feet outside our shoulders and our butts down and chest up,” Sandoval said.

Every athlete received a basketball and T-shirt at the camp.

In addition to the kids picking up valuable pointers heading into the 2014-15 season, Sandoval hopes the camps help introduce the younger athletes to the high school program and builds a better sense of community between the different levels of basketball players in Woodburn.

“Any time you get involved with the community and help, it’s good for our program overall,” he said. “I think the more you invest in the younger kids, I think they’ll be more eager to come out, watch us and support us hopefully coming up in the next season.”
