Speed record falls at Dragstrip
This past weekend featured a pair of speed record holders going head to head in the finals of the AA/Supercharged division of the 28th Annual Napa Auto Parts Oldies But Goodies at the Woodburn Dragstrip.
Mitch Chamberlain opened the weekend Saturday, setting a new speed record at 218.23 miles per hour to advance to Sundays finals. Opposite him was Troy Owens and the Daves Rod Shop-sponsored 41 Willys, which last year set the all-time low elapsed-time record at 6.45 seconds.
Unfortunately, Chamberlains trip to the finals came at a cost after a broken clutch lever in the semi-finals hampered his championship race. Chamberlains team was able to throw together a makeshift lever for the finals, but it was unable to hold together as Owen easier took the victory at 6.565 seconds and 215.56 mph, while Chamberlain slowed to a 7.885-second finish at 148.61 mph.
The Woodburn Dragstrip features weekend races throughout the summer, with the next event scheduled Saturday morning for the third annual NHRDA Pacific Coast Diesel Nationals presented by ISSPRO. For more information, go to www.woodburndragstrip.com.
