Spring preview: St. Paul track and field
Coach: Jess Turner
Last year: The girls team sent 10 athletes to the 1A State Track and Field Championships – placing third – and won the district championship. The boys team sent one athlete to state and placed fourth in districts.
Key athletes: David Elias, Remy Brentano, Carolina Ruvalcaba, Cassidy Merten, Emma Coleman, Cameron Stone
Key losses: Sammi Brentano, Sandra Ruvalcaba, Sarah McKay
Outlook: The boys team returns junior state qualifier David Elias, who placed fifth in the 800-meter finals at Eugene last year.
The girls lose several key contributors from last years team that placed third in state, including half of the Buckaroos state champion 4x100 team.
Still, the Lady?Bucks bring back the teams most decorated athlete from last season, Remy Brentano, who qualified for and placed in four events at state (100, 200, 4x100 and long jump).
The continuing maturation of state placers Emma Coleman (shot put) and Cameron Stone (triple jump) makes the St. Paul girls a sure thing to contend for another district crown.
In addition to the team, St. Paul High?School will once again host the Buckaroo Roundup April 24. The schools annual track and field event was skipped last year due to poor conditions. Over the summer, the track was removed and replaced for the first time since 1999, allowing the school to once again host visiting teams.
Season opener: March 19 at Estacada Opener, 3:15 p.m.
