Spring preview: North Marion baseball

by: JEFF GOODMAN - 2013 Tri-Valley Player of the Year Kyle Williamson returns to the Huskies for his senior season, bringing a steady bat, strong defense in the infield and a dangerous presence for opposing teams on the base paths.Coach: Randy Brack

Last year: 18-9 (14-1 in the Tri-Valley Conference); lost 11-3 to the Klamath Union Pelicans in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Key players: Senior shortstop Kyle Williamson, senior pitcher/second baseman Brock Breshears, senior first baseman Tristan Wampole

Key losses: Wyatt Moore, Keltin Boykin

Outlook: After finishing the regular season ranked sixth in the OSAA polls and winning a league title last season for the first time since 2010, North Marion is vying for a deeper run in the playoffs in 2014.

The Huskies return nearly all their key players from last season, save for First Team pitcher Wyatt Moore (graduation) and First Team designated hitter Keltin Boykin (transfer).

That still leaves the team with reigning Tri-Valley Player of the Year Kyle Williamson, Pitcher of the Year Brock Breshears, First Team infielder Tristan Wampole and five returning all-conference selections Nat Barrell, Shane McKillip, Colin Barrow, Josiah Ramon and Emry Patterson.

The Huskies will have one final chance to win a Tri-Valley Conference title before moving to the Oregon West in 2015.

Season opener: Monday (home) against Scappoose, 5 p.m.
