Girls basketball playoff preview
Kennedy at No. 5 Lost River
The Kennedy girls basketball team will have one final chance to get over the hump and beat a top-10 team this Friday when they face the Lost River Pirates in the 2A state basketball playoffs.
The Trojans (17-8, 10-6 Tri-River) have proven to be one of the top 2A teams in the state this year, but have fallen short against other top teams in their classification.
After losing 56-42 to Santiam in the Tri-River playoffs Friday, Kennedy fell to 0-8 against teams ranked in the top-10 of the OSAA polls.
Kennedys struggles have largely come at the hands of their league rivals, as the Trojans play in the only 2A conference to boast three teams in the top 10. Seven of their losses have came against league rivals No. 1 Regis (twice), No. 6 Western Mennonite (twice) and No. 7 Santiam (three times).
Against the Lost River Pirates (23-3, 6-0 Special District 1), the Trojans will play the No. 5 team in 2A basketball.
The Pirates cruised to a league title against mostly inferior competition. Only one other team in SD1 finished the regular season with a winning record.
Whichever team wins Friday night will move on to the quarterfinals of the state tournament, which will take place at the Pendleton Convention Center from March 5-8.
