Bulldogs sweep at home wrestling tourney
The Woodburn wrestling team finished last week with a flourish, rebounding from 48-30 loss at Corvallis High School?Friday night by winning four straight matches at home the following day.
The Bulldogs hosted teams from Gervais, North Salem, Rex Putnam and Lakeridge on?Saturday, beating all four teams by double-digit margins of victory.
The wrestlers competed their best and pulled together as a team to keep momentum in their favor throughout the tournament, said Woodburn coach Dusty Price. There was definitely some motivation to win on our home mats.
The most contested match of the day came from Woodburns closest neighbor, the Gervais Cougars.
The two teams started their match with a rivalry dual at 126 pounds between Carlos Velasco of Woodburn and Hector Flores of Gervais.
Velasco previously wrestled for Gervais before transferring to Woodburn, while Flores is a former Bulldog wrestler who now competes for the Cougars.
The two athletes wrestled a hard-fought match that ended after six minutes with a 5-1 decision for Velasco.
Woodburn teammate Rodolfo Hernandez picked up a quick pin in the first period against Byron Thiessen at 145 pounds. It was one of four victories by pin for Hernandez on the day.
He was joined by Temoatzin Lopez (120 pounds), Michael Vazquez (113) and Stephan Snegireff (152) as Bulldog wrestlers who finished the day with 4-0 records.
The Bulldogs next scheduled contest is this Saturday at Southridge High School.
