Bulldog wrestlers split matches against Reynolds, Sunset

Vasquez, Hernandez, Snegireff all pick up victories

by: WOODBURN INDEPENDENT ARCHIVES - Woodburn's Stephan Snegireff scored an 8-3 victory in his 160-pound match against Sunset Friday and followed with an 11-5 decision against the hosting Reynolds Raiders. Snegireff was one of four Bulldogs wrestlers who won both matches in the team's season opener. The Woodburn wrestling team traveled to Reynolds High School in Gresham Friday to compete against the host Reynolds Raiders and the Sunset Apollos.

The Bulldogs competed well against the two 6A schools said coach Dusty Price. Although the team lost to the Apollos, the team had several individual victories to help give the team a punch in the arm for the opening wrestling meet of the season.

Leading the team against Sunset was sophomore team captain Michel Vasquez at 113 pounds, who scored a first-round pin. Teammate Temoatzin Lopez won by decision at 120 pounds with a third-period takedown that sealed the victory.

Senior team captain Rodolfo Hernandez controlled his opponent throughout the match at 145 pounds and went on to win 4-0. He was followed with an 8-3 victory by Stephan Snegireff at 160 pounds. Alex Williams (182 pounds) and Jon Uriarte (220 pounds) also picked up victories via forfeit.

“We did pretty good,” said Vasquez after the match, though he admitted there was much work to do in the season before the team is at full strength heading into districts. “(We had) some ups and downs in several weight classes that we need to work on.”

In the team’s second dual of the day, the Bulldogs came back with a victory over the Raiders with a series of first-period pins by Vasquez, Carlos Velasco (126 pounds), Eddie Bravo (132 pounds) and Hernandez.

Sophomore Alex Williams won his 182-pound match by fall in the third period and was followed with an 11-5 decision by Snegireff. The team also took home forfeits for freshman Luis Vanancio (106) and Lopez.

“Overall, the team looks much stronger with more depth,” said coach Dusty Price. “There is a great group of committed wrestlers that will be especially exciting to watch this season.”

Woodburn travels to North Bend High School this weekend to compete in the South Coast Classic on Friday and Saturday.
