The North Marion boys cross country team served notice that it will be the team to beat at the Tri-Valley Conference district meet later this month after racing to an easy win at the 15-team Estacada Invitational on Wednesday at McIver Park.
In a meet that featured all six TVC schools, the Huskies finished well in front of the pack with 40 points to beat runner-up LaSalle Prep by 24.
North Marion senior Christian Parr led the effort by holding down the pacesetter spot from start to finish. He had a pair of Yamhill-Carlton runners tracking him over the first mile, but he pulled ahead of them on a short downhill slope.
The hills are the best place to gain ground because you can speed up without wasting a lot of energy, Parr said. I didnt have anyone to pace me here today, so I wanted to get out fast and stay with it.
He covered the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes 43.18 seconds.
North Marion teammate Colin Barrow followed him through the finishing chute several strides behind. He moved up over the second half of the race to give the Huskies a formidable 1-2 punch.
Coach (Erin Holm) wanted everybody to stick together, so I didnt want to get too far behind Christian, Barrow said. I kept passing people and it felt like I was really moving fast.
He was. Barrow came in at 16:45.58 a personal best by almost two minutes.
Ben Hanberg (sixth, 17:02.69) also earned a top-10 finish, while Grant Barrow (17th, 17:33.30) and Ulises Vargas (20th, 17:34.77) rounded out the Huskies scorers. The teams scoring five crossed the finish line less than a minute apart.
On the girls side, North Marion senior Hannah Surcamp finished 16th in 20:56.52.
