Football roundup: Huskies win league opener

The North?Marion Huskies picked up their first conference victory since 2010 Friday night after taking a 20-0 lead en route to a 34-12 victory on the road against the Madras White Buffaloes.

The Huskies (3-2, 1-0 Tri-Valley) opened conference play in what appears to be the final season against Tri-Valley competition after the OSAA announced plans to move North Marion to the Oregon West for the 2014-15 season. Kyle Williamson and the Huskies wished Madras a fond farewell, as the senior receiver was the first and last player to score, including an impressive one-handed catch while blanketed by a Madras defender on a 45-yard bomb from quarterback Ben Crumley.

Williamson bookended an entertaining game that was played at neighboring Culver High School, where both teams struggled to maintain possession of the ball, turning the ball over back-and-forth in a game that the Huskies ran away with. Running backs Tyler Saucedo and Damien Chavez each scored in the first half to give the Huskies a 20-point lead before Madras got on the board just before the end of the second quarter to make it a 14-point game.

Shane McKillip added a score in the third quarter to put the Huskies up 27-6, but Madras matched to make it 27-12 before Williamson put the finishing touches on the team’s first league victory of coach Doug Bilodeau’s tenure.

The victory snapped a streak of 10-straight conference losses for the Huskies, dating back to the team’s 12-0 victory over Madras to finish the 2010 season.

North Marion returns home this week to face the La Salle Falcons (1-4), who are currently on the receiving end of a three-game losing streak after dropping their conference opener in a 40-6 loss to Gladstone.

Woodburn

Nate Bosquez led the Woodburn football team with a touchdown and 66 all-purpose yards as the Bulldogs fell 55-7 on the road to the Lebanon Warriors Friday night.

Woodburn’s offense was headed by quarterback Camilo Guizar, who finished with 156 yards on 11-of-24 passing, but the Bulldogs had trouble holding onto the ball, giving up five turnovers in the lopsided loss. Angel Carrasquillo led the team’s receivers with five receptions for 74 yards.

After playing three road games in four weeks, the Bulldogs (0-5, 0-3 Mid-Willamette) return home this Friday to take on the Dallas Dragons (3-2, 1-2) who are coming off a 14-6 loss at home to Crescent Valley.

Gervais

The Cougars endured a slick and soggy homecoming evening Friday night as they hosted the Sheridan Spartans in a 28-6 loss.

After giving up a score on the opening drive, Gervais answered back on a sustained drive in the second quarter that was capped by a two-yard score from junior running back Jordan Milkovich to bring the team with 8-6. But the Cougars could not find the end zone for the remainder of the game, and the Spartans took a 14-6 halftime lead and expanded it over the final two quarters to hand Gervais its third loss of the season.

The Cougars (0-3, 0-2 West Valley) travel to Colton Friday to take on the Vikings (2-2, 1-0) to start a string of three straight weeks on the road.
