by: PHIL HAWKINS - Gervais junior Miguel Morales (left) chases down the ball in Wednesdays 5-2 loss at home against the Riverdale Mavericks. The Gervais boys soccer team started the season a week later than anticipated after thunderstorms forced the Cougars to postpone their first game of the season against Westside Christian on Sept. 5.

Instead, Gervais opened the year against Valley Catholic Sept. 9, scoring a 4-4 draw as forward Peter Top scored a pair of goals for the Cougars. Alex Isiordia and Gonzalo Zamora also scored in the contest. Two days later, the Cougars hosted Riverdale and lost 5-2 to the Mavericks.

Gervais was scheduled to travel to De La Salle Tuesday and make up their game against Westside Christian at home Wednesday afternoon
