Apples are the theme at Apple Harvest Day at Champoeg State Heritage Area, which will be held this Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Volunteers in period dress will offer visitors a chance to press and sample fresh apple cider (being made in the photo to the right), sample Dutch oven baked apple desserts and hot cider, string apple circles to dry at home, and bob for apples in the big washtub, or, weather permitting, play snap apple. Reminiscent of the 1860s, the work will go more easily with lively acoustic music of the era by acoustic string band Worn Out Shoes.
This public event is free with an annual OPRD parking pass, camping permit or with the purchase of a $5 day use parking permit.
Friends of Historic Champoeg is a nonprofit organization working with Oregon Parks and Recreation to interpret the natural and cultural history of Champoeg.
