Invited to the annual post and unit picnic, hosted this summer by unit member Beverlee Koutny in Hubbard, the delegates reported on their session.

The week-long experience made a difference in their view of government speakers, allowed them to meet girls from throughout the state and prepared them to be active citizens for their community as they begin their final year of high school.

Structure for the mock state government places girls in a county with elections, courts and justices, as well as legislative goals.

Delegate Selvas gave the opening and closing statements for the prosecution in a mock trial.

Senator Surcamp was elected from her county, representing the Federalist Party.

Reporter Torres covered the story of the newly elected governor for next year’s Girls State session and helped produce the daily newspaper.

The National American Legion also sponsors the Boys State programs.
