Family celebrates Woodburn mans 90th birthday

Julius Mohr turns 90 years old on Aug. 14.

Born in Nebraska, he moved to the Mount Angel area in 1939 with his family, working until he went into the service.

Before going into the service, he married his wife, Florence. They will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary this November.

He served in the South Pacific in the 11th Airborne Division. The war in the Pacific ended Aug. 14, 1945, his 22nd birthday. While in the service, he received a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars with bronze arrowheads, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with bronze spearheads, Philippines Liberation Medal and an expert infantryman badge. The 11th airborne liberated the 2,000 prisoners of war in the Los Baños prison camp. It was a great success.

After leaving the service around Christmas 1945, the Mohrs settled in Albany, where Julius worked at a plywood plant and Willamette Paper Mill, from which he eventually retired.

He and his wife moved to The Estates in Woodburn 18 years ago.

They have one son and five grandchildren and will have a family celebration of his birthday milestone.
