The Woodburn Downtown Association elected new officers for 2014 during its March 26 meeting. During the same session, the group also finalized its merger with Woodburn Downtown Unidos.
Elected president of the association was Anthony Veliz, founder and owner of IZO Public Relations & Marketing, a boutique agency specializing in the Latino market. According to a press release, Veliz grew up the son of farmworkers and carries a passion for education.
Serving as vice president will be Socorro Villarreal, owner of El Palacio Del Vestir, a boutique that specializes in in traditional quinceañera and baptism dresses. Villarreal has lived in Woodburn for 20 years and owned a business downtown for 16 years, and as a board member, she said she would like to work toward changing the image of Woodburn and promoting tourism and economic growth.
Nikki DeBuse, publisher of the Woodburn Independent, was elected secretary. DeBuse served as president of the association and Downtown Unidos last year, and had previously served on the boards of the Woodburn Area Chamber of Commerce, Woodburn Rotary Club and Love Santa, Inc.
And finally, treasurer for 2014 will be Carlos Trujillo, who owns two businesses with his wife: a taxi company and a cell phone store in downtown Woodburn. Born in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, Trujillo immigrated to the United States 22 years ago at the age of 25.
