Council votes to name street Tom Tennant Drive

After considering letters, phone calls and public testimony, the Woodburn City Council voted to name the new road created near the Interstate 5 interchange after slain Woodburn Police Capt. Tom Tennant Monday.

Councilors agreed to the resolution to name the thoroughfare Tom Tennant Drive on a 4-1 vote Monday night after hearing from several citizens, including WPD Det. Rick Puente who spoke as a Woodburn resident, in favor of the change on behalf of Tennant’s widow, Mary.

The lone ‘nay’ vote was cast by Councilor Teresa Alonso Leon, who supported the previously publicized idea of naming the street Bienvenidos Court to recognize the Hispanic population of Woodburn.

The city council concluded the evening by unanimously voting to name the new transit center next to the new street Woodburn Memorial Transit Facility. The name stems from the Dec. 12, 2008 bank bombing that took the lives of Tennant and Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Bill Hakim, and critically wounded WPD Chief Scott Russell.
