The Nut Growers Society honored Dan and JoAnn Keeley of Keeley Family Farms in St. Paul, at its 99th annual meeting last month.
The couples farm was started by JoAnns grandfather in 1898. In 1951, Dan and JoAnn joined the farm. They currently raise hazelnuts, chestnuts, grass seed, clover and wheat. JoAnn started as the main day-to-day manager of the farm, while Dan was a Marion County civil engineer, until last year when he retired from that job just to find another full time position back on the farm with JoAnn.
They have not only contributed to the hazelnut industry, they have also spent countless hours serving their community, said Brenda Frketich, also a St. Paul farmer, who presented the award.
JoAnn is president of the St. Paul Garden Club and active with St. Paul Catholic Church. Dan spends countless hours working with the St. Paul Volunteer Fire Department, American Society of Civil Engineers and the Maplewood Grange.
The couple is also active in the Nut Grower Society.
There is truly no job too large or small for these two! said Polly Owen, executive director of the Hazelnut Industry Office.
