Woodburn population increases one percent in one year

A Portland State University study released late last month shows that Woodburn’s population is growing.

Woodburn’s population has grown from 24,090 to 24,330 in the past year, an increase of 240 people, or 1 percent.

Similarly, neighboring cities saw only a slight incline in population, if anything.

Five residents were added to Aurora’s population, creating a 0.5 percent population growth from 930 to 935.

Hubbard’s population eased up from 3,185 to an even 3,200, a 0.47 percent increase.

Mount Angel’s population increased by 25, from 3,285 residents to 3,310.

Gervais’ population stayed the same at 2,520, as did Donald’s at 980 and St. Paul’s at 420.

The Oregon city with the highest population increase in the past year was Durham, in Washington County, with a 37.7 percent increase in population, from 1,365 to 1,880 residents. Wilsonville also saw a sizeable 5 percent increase, from 20,515 to 21,550. That’s the fourth highest number of new residents, behind much larger communities of Portland, Salem and Eugene.

Only a handful of Oregon cities saw a decrease in population, the largest percentage being Jordan Valley in Malheur County, which saw a 2.78 percent decrease in residents.

Marion County has been consistently growing at a rate of 0.7 percent for the past two years, according to the study. The current Marion County population is 322,880, up 2,385 from last year.

PSU’s Population Research Center post-censal estimates are the annual population estimates prepared by the center, based on the most recent census and represent Oregon’s July 1 populations each year during the decade until the next decennial census.

These estimates are the official population numbers for Oregon and are used to disburse state revenues to Oregon counties and cities. The estimates are certified yearly on Dec. 15.
