Northwood welcomes new naturopathic doctor to health center
Northwood Health Center in Woodburn has a new addition to its staff, and she is one of the only, if not the only, practicing naturopathic doctor in town.
Dr. Karima Bassalé, N.D. (Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine), started at the practice Nov. 1 and will be working part-time out of the clinic, which also provides chiropractic care, acupuncture and physical therapy, among other services.
Bassalé, originally from Olympia, Wash., lives in Portland, where she attended the National College of Natural Medicine for four years after completing her undergraduate degree in biology at Portland State University. The doctor recently finished two years of residency in primary care, in which she had special training in womens health, dermatology and cardiovascular related conditions.
Im licensed in primary care, so patients can come to me for physicals, yearly blood work, things like that, Bassalé said. But I do spend little bit more time with nutrition and lifestyle, looking at the body differently and looking at the cause of the problem.
Bassalé said she works in both womens and mens health and has experience helping those with blood pressure and diabetes issues.
I like seeing the whole family, she said.
Although shes not planning to move away from Portland, where she lives with her husband and 8-month-old baby because thats where her husband works, she is starting to feel settled in at the health center in Woodburn.
Im now getting familiar with the Woodburn community it feels a lot like home (Olympia), she said.
I think Im the only naturopath in this area, so I want people to know they dont need to go to Portland or Salem to get that kind of care.
Bassalé is available to see patients at the health center, located at 559 Glatt Circle, Mondays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursdays from 2 to 8 p.m. For more information, call 503-981-4591.
