Discovering living history

Gervais students attend an event honoring veterans at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville

Gervais High School students learned about history firsthand last Tuesday, when they visited Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville for Living History Day.

The event hosted multiple schools as by: BRAD SIMMONS - Gervais High School students took part in Living History Day for the fourth year in a row, this time celebrating at Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. Students cheered and shook hands with dozens of veterans as they walked by at the end of a ceremony honoring their servicewell as dozens of veterans from around the country. The veterans are from all recent wars, from World War II to the present.

Students toured the museum but also visited the main stage, where survivors of the Bataan Death March spoke. They also listened to accounts from other prisoners of war and even Tuskegee Airman Alex Jefferson, whose visit to Gervais High School started the school’s interest in these events.

Principal Mike Solem said the opportunity is rare to capture this kind of history, since many from this group are aging fast.

“They share information that’s not in any textbook," said Solem. “They talked about what it was like, not knowing if they were going to live from day to day. We want the kids to appreciate what they have and to be respectful of those who have paved the way for them.”
