Tractor accident turns deadly

A Mount Angel man who had just started his retirement died in a bulldozer accident last week at his small farm on Monitor McKee Road just north of town.

Douglas Haycock, 64, his son Mason and his brother-in-law William Leder were removing downed logs from a ravine when the 1940's International bulldozer they were using lurched and began backing down the incline, according to reports from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Haycock became entangled in the tracks and was pulled under the bulldozer.

“They had the parking brake on. Nobody was in the driver’s seat and the parking break went out,” said Jess Doman, Douglas Haycock’s son-in-law.

Mason Haycock and a neighbor were able to use a backhoe to raise the blade of the dozer, freeing Haycock, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Leder, 68, was caught by the blade and suffered serious injuries on his arm and both feet.

Mason Haycock used his belt as a tourniquet and tied it around Leder’s arm. Deputies credited him with providing life-saving first aid to Leder until Mount Angel Medics and Woodburn Ambulance personnel arrived to take over.

Leder, who suffered a serious arm injury along with three broken bones in one ankle and another broken bone in his other foot, was flown by Life-Flight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland where his condition has stabilized.

Leder, who is a realtor for Hallmark Realty in Woodburn, has already had two surgeries on his arm and faces several more on both feet in the days and weeks ahead, Doman said. Doctors were able to save his arm, he said.

Haycock had retired in April following a long career as an electrician. Throughout his life, he had an active membership in the LDS Church, including seven years as bishop of the Woodburn Second Ward. He and his wife Deborah had recently taken a cruise to Alaska, which had been a lifelong dream, Doman said.

“He was pretty well situated for his retirement life,” he said. “But the good Lord had other plans.”
