And, this year, things are really new.

The Tigard and Tualatin high school football teams find themselves in a new league this year — the Three Rivers League.

Sherwood also will be a new member of that powerhouse league. But that’s not the only new thing for the Bowmen this year. Sherwood, a powerhouse all its own at the Class 5A ranks — where its has played in the past four state championship games — is jumping up to the Class 6A level this year.

Even Horizon Christian has to deal with some newness this year, as the West Valley League has a bit of a new look with the additions of Santiam Christian and Taft.

And all four of the local squads will start their new seasons on Friday.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” Sherwood coach Greg Lawrence said of his team’s first game at the Class 6A level.

In their Class 6A debut, the Bowmen will host Grants Pass in a non-league game starting at 7 p.m. at Sherwood High School. However, this won’t be the Sherwood’s first game against the Cavemen.

The teams met in the 2009 season, with the Bowmen getting a 35-18 victory at Grants Pass that year.

The Cavemen went 7-4 on the season in 2013, while the Bowmen went 12-1.

This year, for the first time in a long time, Lawrence says, Sherwood won’t have a senior starting at quarterback.

A pair of Bowmen juniors, Adley Rutschman and Adam Vasquez, are vying for the starting spot. They both will likely see a lot of action under center in Friday’s opener.

Tigard will also be debuting a new starting quarterback on Friday when it hosts Grant in a season-opening non-league game starting at 7 p.m. at the school’s Robert A. Gray Stadium.

Senior J.T. Greenough will be taking over as the Tigers’ starting quarterback this season.

“He’s earned that,” Tigard coach Craig Ruecker said.

Tigard, which went 12-1 on the season last year, going unbeaten in Pacific Conference play before reaching the semifinal round of the Class 6A state playoffs, has a good number of talented returnees from that team — including Sam Inos, Landon Floyd, Conner Crist, Tyler Walker and Brady McGetrick, among others.

Grant went 2-8 on the season a year ago.

Tigard last faced the Generals in 2011, with the Tigers getting a 49-24 win.

Tigard also brings a 16-game regular-season winning streak into Friday’s contest at Tigard High School.

Tualatin will start its season on the road, as the Timberwolves will play Westview from the Metro League Friday, starting at 7 p.m., at Westview High School.

The Timberwolves, like Tigard and Tualatin, will be breaking in a new starting quarterback.

Junior Danté Reid, a three-sport standout at Tualatin, takes over the quarterbacking duties for the Wolves.

Westview went 7-4 in the 2013 season, as did Tualatin.

The Wolves last faced the Wildcats in a 2009 state playoff first-round game, with Westview getting a 16-14 win.

In other season-openers on Friday involving Three Rivers League teams, Newberg will be home to face Crescent Valley at 7 p.m., West Linn will be home to face rival Oregon City at 7 p.m., Lake Oswego will host Southridge at 7 p.m., Lakeridge travels to Sheldon for a 7 p.m. contest and Canby will head South to play Roseburg at 7 p.m.

Horizon Christian opens its season with a 7 p.m. non-league game at Clatskanie on Friday.

The teams also met last year, with Clatskanie getting an 18-16 win in a game played at Horizon Christian.

The Hawks return their starting quarterback from a year ago in junior Sandis Chhay. Sophomore Koby McCallum, a transfer from Wilsonville, who has been battling Chhay for the starting spot, could also see some action at quarterback in the opener.

Horizon Christian was 5-5 on the season in 2013 while Clatskanie was 7-3.
