Snow takes its toll on sports schedules

Local schools left scrambling to make up the postponed events

by: DAN BROOD - WAITING GAME -- Sherwood High School senior Alex Castaneda and his Bowmen teammates had their game with Liberty postponed twice. The snowy weather that hit the area late last week caused quite a mess.

Driving conditions, work schedules and everyday activities were, well, messed up.

And so were area high school sports schedules.

The local schools were left scurrying, trying to reschedule events that were postponed last week. Some did get rescheduled. Others just got cancelled.

Among the biggest events that felt the brunt of the wintery conditions was the varsity boys and girls basketball doubleheader between rivals Tigard and Tualatin. Those games were expected to be played in front of a big crowd Friday night at Tigard High School.

Those games were rescheduled for Wednesday night at Tigard. Results of those games weren’t available when The Times went to press. But stories and photos from those contests can be found on The Times’ Web site, at www.tigardtimes.com.

The Tigard wrestling team was slated to host South Salem in its final home match of the season last Thursday, but that was postponned. The teams tried to make up the match on Monday, but that, too, was wiped away by the wintery conditions. With the Special District 3 seeding meeting set for Tuesday, and, with the district’s regional tourney starting on Friday, the Tigard-South Salem match was cancelled.

“That’s a bummer, because our kids have to miss out on Senior Night,” Tigard wrestling coach Geoff Jarman said. “Also, it would have been nice to have that South Salem match for seedings.”

The Tualatin wrestling team went through the same ordeal. The Timberwolves were slated to host West Salem last Thursday. That match was postponed until Monday, and then cancelled.

The Tigard and Tualatin swim teams had their meets last Thursday postponed. Those meets were made up on Tuesday, with Tualatin swimming at Hillsboro and the Tigers traveling to Newberg.

At Sherwood, the boys and girls basketball games with Liberty slated for Friday were postponed. They were rescheduled for Monday, but postponed again.

The Sherwood teams will now face Liberty Saturday in a doubleheader at Liberty High School. The varsity girls game will start at 5:45 p.m., with the boys game to follow at 7:15 p.m.

The Bowmen will then host Liberty in a doubleheader on Feb. 28.

Sherwood’s home wrestling match with St. Helens, slated for last Thursday, was scheduled to be made up on Wednesday.

Sherwood’s swim meet with Wilsonville, slated to be held last Thursday at the Tualatin Swim Center, was cancelled and won’t be made up.

At Horizon Christian, the Hawks’ girls and boys varsity basketball home games with Colton on Friday were slated to be made up on Wednesday.
