Tigard track duo shine at nationals

Gilbert, Pavin earn top honors at the USATF meet


Members of the Tigard Youth Track Club made plenty of noise at the 2013 USA Track & Field Junior Olympic National Outdoor Championships.by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Hunter Gilbert of the Tigard Youth Track Club placed sixth in both the pentathlon and the 800-meter run at the USATF National Championships held in North Carolina.

The Tigard club had 11 athletes competing at the meet, held July 22-28 at North Carolina A & T University, located in Greensboro, N.C.

Two of those Tigard competitors, Hunter Gilbert and Lauren Pavin, earned USATF All-American honors by placing in the top eight in their events.

Gilbert finished in sixth place in the Boys ages 11-12 pentathlon with a score of 2,191 points. He also finished in sixth place in the Boys 11-12 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 18.4 seconds.

“We are so proud of Hunter and Lauren,” Tigard Youth Track Club head coach Ralph Greene said. “It takes a lot of courage to come all the way out here and compete against the best. It's a great experience for all of our kids and we enjoy doing it every year.”

Gilbert and Pavin also competed in the 200 and 400 sprints at the national meet.

Prior to the national championships, the Tigard Youth Track Club qualified 43 competitors for the USATF regional championships held in Seattle.
