Six Sherwood doubles teams qualify for state tourney

Big time.

In girls doubles play at the tournament, which was held Monday through Friday at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center, Sherwood had all four semifinal teams. In boys play, Sherwood boasted two of the four semifinal teams.

With the top four singles and doubles placers in boys and girls play advancing to the Class 5A state tourney, all six of those Bowmen doubles teams are moving on to state competition.

In girls doubles play at the district tournament, Sherwood had five of the eight quarterfinal teams. In one of those quarterfinal match-ups, the Lady Bowmen team of seniors Bryce Keicher and Lydia Ng bested teammates Amy Marks and Taylor Wochnick 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to earn a trip to state.

The top-seeded Sherwood doubles team of seniors Courtney Mostul and Nancy Nguyen scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sandy’s Sawyer Kurtz and Emmaline Thatcher in a quarterfinal tilt to earn its state bid.

The Sherwood team of seniors Hannah Huntington and Amy Otis, seeded No. 4 in the tourney, posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Claire Mallon and Jessica Small of Wilsonville in the quarterfinals.

The No. 2-seeded team of seniors Carley Mills and Kelsey Niebergall made it a Lady Bowmen sweep as they bested Han Nguyen and Nancy To of Parkrose 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

The four winning Sherwood girls doubles teams were slated to meet in Wednesday’s semifinal, third-place and championship matches. Results of those matches weren’t available when The Times went to press.

Sherwood freshman Allison Schwarm qualified for the state tournament in singles play. At the district tourney, after winning her first two matches, Schwarm bested No. 3 seed Haley Mann-Miller of St. Helens 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to earn a state bid.

Schwarm was slated to face No. 2 seed Hailey Fischer of Sandy in Wednesday’s semifinals.

In boys doubles play at the district tourney, the Bowmen team of freshman Carson Donnelly and senior Grant McLaughlin, the No. 4 seed, scored a 6-0, 6-0 win against Sandy’s Skyler Kansala and William Silva in the quarterfinal round to earn its state bid.

The third-seeded team of Sherwood seniors Alec Wisthoff and Colton Baker scored a 6-1, 6-3 quarterfinal victory over Wilsonville’s Jesse Evans and Rigel Flora to earn a state tourney berth.

The Class 5A state tournaments will be held May 16-18 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center and the Portland Tennis Center.
