Jan's Paperbacks hosts 'Sweet Cravings' author

Jan’s Paperbacks is hosting a special book signing with Kyra Bussanich on Saturday at 1 p.m. All are welcome.

Local gluten-free pastry chef, first-time author and Aloha High School alum, Kyra Bussanich will be greeting customers and signing copies of her first cookbook, “Sweet Cravings: 50 Seductive Desserts for a Gluten-free Lifestyle.”

The book was released in September and features recipes for triple berry cobbler, chiffon pie, incredible cupcakes and more that will tempt even those who need not fear gluten in their diets. by: SUBMITTED ART - 'Sweet Cravings' author Kyra Bussanich will return to her old stomping grounds Saturday to sign copies of her new book at Jans Paperbacks in Aloha.

“Gluten-free baking can be very intimidating to newcomers,” Bussanich said. “My book has been designed to show what are the easy, intermediate and advanced recipes. I don’t want people to get discouraged and give up.”

The book will also give away one of Bussanich’s secrets involving ingredients.

“Each of my products has a distinct texture,” she said, “so I use different blends.”

With delicious flavor combinations and unique recipes like cherry white chocolate scones, Boston cream pie cupcakes and Mexican chocolate baked Alaska, this collection of 50 foolproof recipes invites home cooks to whip up sweet treats that everyone at the birthday party, brunch or potluck can enjoy.

The idea for this book has been simmering for quite a while. Four years ago, a publisher approached Bussanich with the idea after being impressed by an interview she gave to a magazine.

Bussanich graduated from Le Cordon Bleu’s patisserie and baking program and worked as the assistant pastry chef at clarklewis in Portland before founding her own award-winning gluten-free bakery, Kyra’s Bake Shop (formerly Crave Bake Shop) in Lake Oswego. Bussanich’s profile as a master of nongluten baking soared as she twice won the “Cupcake Wars” held on the Food Network, where she was the first gluten-free baker to appear on — and the only to win — the televised baking competition.

Samples of the gluten-free lemon pound cake (featured on the cookbook cover) will be available.

The community is invited to join the independently owned Aloha bookstore for an afternoon of fun and refreshments. Jan’s Paperbacks is located at 18095 S.W. Tualatin Valley Highway.
