Soapbox: Veteran coach in Sherwood says thank you

Bill Brown is a Sherwood resident who has coached girls’ soccer at Sherwood High School for more than two decades.

A couple of months ago I decided to retire from my position as the head girls’ soccer coach at Sherwood High School. I have held that job for 21 years.

During my time here, we had a lot of success on the field. Equally important, our players have excelled in the classroom. We have consistently placed in the top 10 GPA-wise, averaging 3.7 for as long as I can remember. Our players were always active in their school, church and community.

There are many reasons for our success, but it is primarily because of the quality and character of our student-athletes. We have also worked hard to build a successful relationship with the local youth soccer club in our community. The pipeline of young players coming into the high school is as strong as ever.

Sherwood is a special community. The support for the girls’ soccer program has always been strong. We have consistently had wonderful parent volunteers who have been extremely helpful in ways too numerous to mention.

The Athletic Department and our Booster Club are tremendous supporters of all the athletic teams at the high school. The athletic directors I have worked with over the years, from Rick Hassman to Doug Hoffmeister to Randy Ramp, are great people who worked incredibly long hours on behalf of our kids. The Booster Club is without a doubt the best one in the state.

Although funding for athletics continues to be reduced, particularly in the past several years, the district has continued to fund athletics at reasonable levels. Dan Brood, the local sportswriter, is a solid professional who always writes with the best interests of our kids at the top of his list.

It has been a great ride for me personally. The list of people, parents and coaches to thank is a long one. Thank you to everyone. The memories are many and the future is bright.
