Ways to donate to Hurricane Harvey victims
As Tropical Storm Harvey continues to dump rain on East Texas and Louisiana, groups like the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities USA — among many others — are collecting donations to help its victims.
Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas, as a Category 4 hurricane on Friday, Aug. 25. The storm has gradually weakened but has lingered over coastal Texas, bringing damaging winds, record rainfall totals and catastrophic flooding to the region. More than 30 deaths have been reported so far.
Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States, has been among the hardest-hit communities, with an uncounted number of homes and businesses damaged or destroyed by wind and floodwaters and thousands of people displaced.
The Red Cross has also set up a text-to-donate system — texting HARVEY to 90999 will automatically add a $10 donation to the Red Cross to support Harvey relief efforts onto your next cellphone bill.
The Salvation Army has set up a similar line, enabling contributors to text STORM to 51555 or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY to donate. Donations are also accepted online.
Catholic Charities is also inviting people to text CCUSADISASTER to 71777 to make a donation. Disaster fund donations are also accepted on its website.
The charity GlobalGiving has established a Harvey relief fund with a goal of raising at least $2 million. Donations to the fund can be made on this page.
Americares is also collecting money to help provide emergency aid and medicine to storm victims. It is collecting donations online.
For those seeking to support animals affected by Harvey, Best Friends Animal Society, The Humane Society of the United States and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are asking for donations to their disaster relief funds.
Local organizations are also accepting donations to support storm victims. The Greater Houston Community Foundation and United Way of Greater Houston have established relief funds. Donations are also being collected by the Animal Defense League of Texas.
The Hillsboro Hops — Washington County's minor league baseball team — are contributing, too, auctioning off a team-signed jersey and bat as a Harvey relief fundraiser.
The fundraiser website GoFundMe has also compiled Harvey fundraisers onto a single page.
