Work has begun on what owners say is the world's first taproom dedicated to finding homes for shelter dogs and supporting non-profits working on their behalf.
Fido's, 7700 S.W. Dartmouth St., No. 110, in Tigard, opens this summer near the Washington Square mall. It will offer beer, wine and food, as well as a chance to romp with local shelter dogs who are fostered at Fido's. For a small fee, patrons can spend 30 minutes to an hour with the dogs. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to non-profits working to find homes for dogs.
The taproom also will feature art, speakers and events that highlight the rich relationship between dogs and humans.
Entrepreneur Scott Porter said he decided to launch Fido's after learning about cat cafes, where people can visit with homeless cats, and wondering if something similar but with more impact could be created to help homeless dogs.
"By partnering with shelters and donating a portion of proceeds to them, Fido's will educate people about the plight of homeless dogs and showcase the important work that shelters do — all to help more dogs find their forever homes," Porter said.
