Downtown caterer named Business of the Year
For 30 years, Steve DeAngelo has been cooking up something special in the Tigard business which bares his name.
Now, hes being recognized for it.
DeAngelo's Catering & EventsDeAngelos Catering & Events was named the 2014 "Business of the Year by the Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce.
The award, which recognizes Chamber businesses that have made in-depth contributions to the community,
DeAngelo donates food to local homeless shelters and food pantries, and currently runs a food compost pilot program with the city. He also serves as Chairman of the Board for Potluck in the Park, a group which helps feed people in need each Sunday in downtown Portland. DeAngelo also studies composting strategies for Washington County through the countys solid waste focus group and founded the Sustainable Catering Association.
DeAngelo, who opened DeAngelos Catering in 1982, is a vocal advocate for revitalizing the citys downtown as part of the Tigard Downtown Alliance, a group of local property and business owners working to breath new life into the long-troubled city core.
Through the Alliance, DeAngelo has reached across city, Chamber and community lines to help create a vision for what people can bring to the table to help downtown, said Chamber CEO Debi Mollahan.
He has spent hundreds of hours researching the characteristics of effective downtowns, connecting with potential stakeholders/advocates, has convened weekly Tigard Downtown Alliance leadership team meetings and monthly Downtown Dialogues to create momentum and shared vision for downtown, Mollahan said. Take all these things together and you can see the Steve and DeAngelos Catering & Events really want to see the community of Tigard thrive.
DeAngelos is one of several Shining Stars named in 2014, including First Citizen Thomas Murphy and local volunteer Carol Herron, among others.
Howells award will be presented with other Shining Stars recipients at a special dinner and ceremony at 5:30 p.m., Friday, April 25, at Embassy Suites, 9000 S.W. Washington Square Road.
The 1960s-themed dinner will include a silent auction, dessert dash and more. Tickets are $35 per person.
