THS senior named Youth Volunteer of the Year

Katie Howell is latest Shining Star recipient

A Tigard High School senior has been named a Shining Star winner for her volunteerism in the community.

Katie Howell was named 2014 Youth Volunteer of the Year by the Tigard-Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. Howell

Howell has more than 600 volunteer hours under her belt in the past four years through her work with Tigard High’s National Honor Society, St. Francis Youth Group, Key Club and the OMSI Rising Star program, where high school students demonstrate scientific principles at the museum.

Howell volunteers at the Tigard Public Library and with the nonprofit group Destination Imagination.

She is an officer with Tigard High’s STOP club, a member of the Unity Team, a tutor for English language learners and a leader in LINK, which helps incoming freshman get acquainted with the high school.

And Howell isn’t done there. She regularly volunteers with projects focused on those in need — whether human or animal. She volunteers with the pet supply drive for the Oregon Humane Society as well as with a holiday toy drive.

“The majority of Katie’s volunteer activities are focused on helping others, whether it is doing yard work for the elderly and making meals for homeless through her youth group, planning events at school focused on anti-bullying or helping incoming freshmen through LINK,” said Debi Mollahan, chamber CEO. “She truly believes in serving and helping others.”

Howell is among the top 5 percent of students academically at Tigard High, Mollahan said, and performs with the Portland Youth Ballet’s senior performing company.

Howell plans to attend college and start a business providing mobile ultrasounds for the underserved, particularly teen mothers.

“Katie has a passion for others and for putting them first,” Mollahan said. “With this natural inclination to help others, it is no surprise that Katie is seeking a career in the nonprofit sector.”

Mollahan said Howell is one of several young people in Tigard who are active in volunteer efforts. “It is our pleasure to acknowledge their contributions of dedication, energy and community spirit,” Mollahan said. “They are the future."

Howell is one of several Shining Stars named in 2014, including First Citizen Thomas Murphy and local volunteer Carol Herron, among others.

Howell’s award will be presented with other Shining Stars recipients at a special dinner and ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at Embassy Suites, 9000 S.W. Washington Square Road.

The 1960s-themed dinner will include a silent auction, dessert dash and more. Tickets are $35 per person.
