SWAT evacuates Toys R Us, arrest two

ParhamAuthorities have arrested a man after police say he led officers on a chase across Highway 217 and hid inside a Toys R Us toy store in Tigard on Thursday night.

Loren Parham, 33, of San Francisco, and 21-year-old Geraldine Curiel of Fairview, Calif., were allegedly involved in several acts of theft, identity theft, credit card fraud and forgery at Washington Square mall on Thursday, said Jim Wolf, a spokesman with the Tigard Police Department.

A Tigard police investigator who happened to be inside the mall was tipped off by mall security to the pair’s actions, but Parham ran off before he could be arrested.

CurielCuriel was arrested shortly after Parham ran off.

Officers chased Parham through the mall’s parking lot. Wolf said Parham ran across Highway 217 during rush hour and eventually took refuge inside Toys R Us toy store at 10065 S.W. Cascade Ave.

The store was evacuated and customers and employees were rushed to nearby Suburban Propone.

Members of the Washington County Tactical Negotiation Team — the county's version of SWAT — searched the toy store and found Parham hiding among boxes of merchandise on top of a 30-foot-tall storage rack.

Parham was arrested without incident. No one was injured.

The Tigard Police Commercial Crimes Unit is continuing its investigation.

Parham and Curiel were lodged in the Washington County Jail.

Parham faces charges of first-degree theft of service, criminal conspiracy for aggravated identity theft and criminal conspiracy for second-degree theft.

Curiel faces charges of identity theft, aggravated identity theft, first-degree theft, second-degree theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Other charges are likely, Wolf said.
