Investigation continues into cause of Sunday blaze
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighters battled a blaze that engulfed house on Tonquin Road in Sherwood Sunday afternoon.
At 12:20 p.m., the district received a call from a witness who reported black smoke and flames coming from a single-story home at 11285 S.W. Tonquin Road. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the structure fully involved in fire and initiated a defensive fire attack from outside the structure.
A fire commander also discovered that low-hanging power lines were already involved in the fire and noticed a large propane tank on the east side of the home as well. In addition, a train was approaching, and a large amount of smoke from the fire was blowing across the train tracks along Tonquin Road.
Railroad officials were notified, and both sides of Tonquin Road were closed to traffic as crews battled the fire.
Fire officials reported that there were no other structures threatened by the blaze. The involved house, which was vacant at the time of the fire, was being used as a business office and not as a residence. Firefighters brought the fire under control at 12:48 p.m.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time; however, the structure suffered significant damage. A damage estimate has not yet been determined.
