Sandy girls slip past Rex Putnam over middle mile
MILWAUKIE — The Sandy girls cross country team passed its first league test with a tight win over Rex Putnam as part of a four-team race at North Clackamas Park last Wednesday.
The Kingsmen got out quickly with rookie Kayla Ingraham, moving to the front of the pack and staying a couple strides in front of a pair of Sandy challengers through the first loop of the 5K course.
Sandy leaders Nikki Stokes, Souvanny Carpenter and Isabella Kansala gave chase, while each team's support pack shifted positions throughout the three-mile journey.
The Pioneers made their winning charge after Stokes worked her way into the lead, while circling the dog park area in the early stages of the second loop.
Stokes came through the finish line in 19:52.9 — five seconds ahead of Ingraham.
Sandy's Souvanny Carpenter (3rd, 20:26) and Isabella Kansala (4th, 20:44.5) were the next two across, putting the Pioneers in command of the team race.
