SANDY — From start to finish, there was never a doubt that Sandy was the team in control.

The Pioneers scored a goal in the opening minute of their season opener against Benson and never looked back, defeating the Techmen 3-0 on Thursday night at Sandy High School.

Jeret Gillingham led the way with a goal and an assist while Tayler Kellim and Ryan Escareno each scored a goal apiece.

"I was very pleased. We saw a group that came out more comfortable and confident than they did last year. It was exciting to see," Sandy head coach Garet Luebbert said. "I couldn't imagine a better start for these guys."

From the opening kickoff, it was clear that Sandy was the aggressor. The Pioneers attacked the Benson front line immediately, leading to a quick scoring opportunity. Gillingham sent a sharp pass to Kellim on the outside, who then finished the feed into the upper left-hand corner of the goal to give Sandy the 1-0 advantage.

Sandy would get three more good looks at the net early on in the first half but weren't able to capitalize. However, the Pioneers would posses the ball for the majority of the half, which didn't allow Benson many offensive opportunities.
