Saints clean up the 'D' to earn a split
Mt. Hood claims Game 2 on a Joe Piercey shutout effort
The Mt. Hood CC baseball team needed a win Tuesday night and pitcher Joe Piercey delivered with a 3-0 shutout over Chemeketa.
Piercey scattered four hits and struck out four during his complete-game effort that gave the Saints a split in their home doubleheader.
Mt. Hood scored all of its runs in the fourth inning, with Logan Grindy fouling off a pair of pitches to stay alive before sending a lead-off single into center field. He moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Dahlberg and scored what would prove to be the winning run on a Tommy Lane double that dropped just ahead of a diving center fielder near the warning track.
It was a good team effort to get that run in, Grindy said. Once we got those runs on the board, there was no turning back.
Mt. Hood increased its lead to 3-0 when Jake Azevado whipped a line drive past the third-basemans glove for a two-run single.
Chemeketa threatened to get the runs back in its next at-bats by loading the bases with no one out. Piercey turned the tide with a strikeout, and Kody Matthews fielded a one-hopper near third base for the final out.
Joe has a passion that spills over to the rest of us, Grindy said. We got out of a couple sticky situations and were able to pick up the win for him.
The Storm would go down in order in each of the last two innings with Mt. Hoods shortstop Cole Hamilton accounting for all three outs in the sixth, while Michael Travers made a catch on the run in center field to end the game.
At this point in the season, we cant afford to lose many games, so it was huge for us to comeback the way we did in Game 2, Hamilton said.
The Saints held a 6-2 lead late in the first game of Tuesdays doubleheader only to give up five runs in the last three innings to lose 7-6. Mt. Hood committed six errors in the game. Lane led the Mt. Hood bats going 3 for 4 with a double.
