Seventh graders take over division lead after shutout

Sept. 28

Varsity (8th grade)

LAKERIDGE 28, SANDY 6 — Brody Diaz broke through the line to cap Sandy’s opening drive with a touchdown run, but the Pacers would put up the final three touchdowns of the day to earn the win.

JV (7th grade)

SANDY 6, LIBERTY 0 — Sandy’s defense set the tone on the game’s opening play when Skylar Corpuz broke into the backfield and knocked the ball loose, and teammate Brendan McAra recovered the fumble.

The only points of the day came in the second quarter when QB Colton Gorski ran 11 yards into the end zone, set up by a pair of first-down runs by Glynne McGaughey.

Corpuz stuck a Liberty running back for a 5-yard loss to kill the team’s opening drive of the second half, and Kyle Willhite came up with a tackle on 3rd-and-4 to stop another Liberty drive late in the third quarter.

Sandy had a chance to put the game out of reach when McGaughey broke loose for a 25-yard gain. But the threat ended at the 4-yard line when the wet weather contributed to a wild snap and a fumble.

Sandy secured the victory when McAra intercepted a Liberty pass near midfield with 1:22 on the clock.

The Pioneers (3-1) lead the Percich-Pacific Division.

Grades 5-6

WESTVIEW RED 31, SANDY RED 18 — Sandy kept the game close in the first half with a pair of Colby Worthylake touchdowns, including a 70-yard scamper as he followed the blocks of Josh Paugh down the field. Worthylake added Sandy’s final points on a 70-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

Grades 3-4

BARLOW BEATS SANDY — Sandy’s Joey Wagner broke loose on a 35-yard run that put points on the scoreboard 15 seconds into the game, but Barlow rallied to win the game.

Sandy stopped Barlow on 4th-and-3 on one second-half drive, and Cade Speitz broke through for a quarterback sack to stall another Bruins’ threat.

Sept. 21

JV (7th grade)

SHERWOOD 54, SANDY 25 — The Pioneers stayed close in the first half, pulling to within 16-13 when Glynne McGaughey broke free for an 86-yard touchdown run.

Nate Olsen caught a TD pass earlier in the quarter, set up by a 20-yard run by Cade Stirnaman. Sandy’s defense held Sherwood on fourth down, ending the Bowmen’s drive when Kole Adovnik recovered a fumble.

Colton Gorski scored on a 30-yard run and hit Stirnaman with a short pass for Sandy’s two scores in the second half.
